New York City Gay/Lesbian BarsBrandy’s Piano BarThe performing waitstaff and loyal regulars give this Upper East Side cabaret space a friendly, neighborhood feel.
The SceneSince the early 1980s, this gay-owned-and-operated piano bar has thrived—thanks to its talented staff and a friendly atmosphere in which regulars mingle effortlessly with first-time visitors. A bar seating 20 runs the length of the room on the left side, while a banquette runs all around the periphery of the room, which is filled out by round tables and chairs accommodating 40. At 9:30pm, a rotating roster of pianists accompanies the singing waitstaff. The DrawBrandy’s has earned its reputation as a “performance bar”—one that emphasizes professional entertainment over open mikes and sing-alongs. The pianists, bartenders and servers are veterans from Broadway, musical theater and cabaret. Their choice of material is as eclectic and varied as their resumes. Early EveningBefore the live pianist arrives at 9:30pm, the bartenders (a fun and personable lot) play CDs from their own collection. From 4pm to 8pm daily, get $1 off drinks. Star SearchOn Mondays, their weekly night off, Broadway stars have been know to slip in under the radar and belt out a cabaret tune. 235 East 84 th St |
